The Municipality of Temagami provides comprehensive emergency services to ensure public safety. In emergencies, residents should dial 911 for immediate assistance. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Temiskaming Detachment, located at 32 Lakeshore Drive, can be reached at 705-569-3633 or toll-free at 1-888-310-1122. Nipissing Ambulance Services operates from 7 Stevens Road.

The Temagami Fire Department, situated at 5 Stevens Road, and the Marten River Fire Department at 2877 Ontario Hwy 11 North, provide fire protection services; both can be contacted at 705-569-3421 for non-emergencies. To report a forest fire, call 1-705-310-3473. For power outages or electrical hazards, Hydro One's 24-hour emergency line is 1-800-434-1235. Additional resources include the Temagami Lake Watch Program and the Near North Crime Stoppers at 1-705-497-5555. Goals of the Fire Service

The goal of the Temagami Fire Service is to provide fire protection services through the three lines of defense by protecting the lives and property from the adverse effects of fires or exposure to dangerous conditions created by man or nature.

The three lines of defense are:

  1. Public education and
  2. Fire safety standards and code
  3. Emergency response (suppression)

    Temagami Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment – Spring 2025

    The Temagami Fire Department is pleased to announce the launch of its Spring 2025 Volunteer Firefighter Recruitment Campaign. We are seeking community-minded individuals who are ready to make a meaningful impact by joining our dedicated team of volunteer firefighters. This is a unique opportunity to develop valuable skills, contribute to public safety, and be part of an essential emergency service in Temagami.

    Volunteer firefighters are the backbone of small-town emergency response. Whether responding to a structure fire, motor vehicle collision, wildland fire, or rescue, the Temagami Fire Department relies on the commitment, courage, and readiness of our volunteers to protect lives and property throughout our municipality.

    We encourage all interested individuals to apply as early as possible. Our recruitment process is designed to identify motivated individuals who are physically capable, willing to learn, and committed to serving their community.


    Who Can Apply?

    To be eligible for consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

    • Residency Requirement: You must reside year-round within 15 kilometres of  the Temagami fire station.
    • Age: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
    • Driver’s License: A valid Ontario Class G2 license is required at the time of application. We promote recruits to obtain a Class DZ license within a specified timeframe after recruitment.
    • Background and Availability: Applicants must be able to provide clean driver’s abstracts and references, vulnerable sector checks and demonstrate a willingness to commit time to training, emergency responses, and community outreach events.

    What’s Involved in the Recruitment Process?

    The recruitment process consists of several stages, all designed to ensure applicants are capable, reliable, and suited to the demands of fire service:

    1. Application Submission: Complete and submit the official application form with all required documentation.
    2. Physical Testing: Candidates will undergo basic physical assessments to gauge their fitness.
    3. Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by senior fire department personnel.
    4. Reference and Driver Abstract Checks: Finalists will be required to provide a clean driving record and personal references.

    Training Commitments

    Firefighting is a skill that requires ongoing development and dedication. Our training program is designed to prepare new recruits to serve safely and effectively in real emergency situations:

    • Pre-Service Online Training: Recruits must complete online self-directed learning covering fire behavior, emergency medical basics, and firefighter safety.
    • In-Person Training: Classroom and field-based instruction will follow, including equipment handling, hose operations, ladders, search and rescue, and fire suppression techniques.
    • Ongoing Training Schedule: Active firefighters are expected to attend regular weekly training sessions:
      • Monday Evenings: 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
      • Weekend Sessions: as required.

    Attendance at training is essential for safety, certification, and team readiness.


    Compensation and Advancement

    While the position is volunteer-based, Temagami firefighters are compensated with an honourarium. Additional benefits include:

    • Access to advanced training in areas such as wildland firefighting, auto extraction, etc.
    • Protective gear is fully supplied by the Department
