Municipal Property Tax Relief for Low-Income Seniors and Persons with Disabilities

Apply by December 31 or within 45 days of your final tax bill

The Municipality of Temagami offers property tax relief to assist low-income seniors and low-income persons with disabilities with increases to their residential property taxes. This program is authorized under By-law No. 25-1814 and applies to eligible owner-occupied primary residences.

Who Can Apply?

You may qualify if you:

  • Are a senior (65+) receiving the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), or
  • Are receiving ODSP or Canada Pension Plan Disability (CPPD) benefits,
    AND
  • Own and live in the home as your primary residence for at least 10 months per year;
  • Meet the gross income thresholds in the by-law:
    • 1 person: $35,000
    • 2 people: $50,000
    • 3 or more: $50,000 + $5,000 for each additional household member

What Help Is Available?

You can choose one of the following:

  • Cancellation of the property tax increase (above $30), up to $300 per year, OR
  • Deferral of the tax increase, with interest at the Bank of Canada’s prime rate, repayable upon sale, transfer, or loss of eligibility

How to Apply

You must:

  • Complete all sections of the form
  • Attach supporting documents (proof of identity, income, residency, eligibility)
  • Have all co-owners or spouses sign the form
  • Submit to the Municipal Treasurer by:
    • December 31 of the taxation year, or
    • Within 45 days of receiving your final property tax bill (whichever is later)

All applications and supporting documents will be treated as confidential and handled in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). Information may only be shared with provincial or federal agencies for the sole purpose of verifying eligibility.
