Our Community

Temagami is a small and scenic municipality located in northeastern Ontario, known for its rugged landscapes, pristine lakes, and ancient forests. With a population of just over 800 residents, the community is nestled on the shores of Lake Temagami and serves as a hub for outdoor recreation and wilderness tourism. The area attracts nature lovers and adventurers drawn to its canoe routes, hiking trails, and old-growth pine stands, some of the oldest in the province. Temagami’s natural beauty plays a central role in the identity and lifestyle of the community.

The population of Temagami skews older, reflecting broader demographic trends in rural Ontario. Many residents are long-time community members, with deep local roots and a strong sense of place. Despite its small size, Temagami maintains essential services and infrastructure, including a municipal government, schools, a health centre, and volunteer-based emergency services. The economy is closely tied to tourism, forestry, and government services, with seasonal fluctuations that mirror outdoor recreation patterns.

Temagami is also home to the Temagami First Nation, located on Bear Island in the middle of Lake Temagami. The community has a deep Indigenous heritage, with the Anishinaabe people maintaining cultural, spiritual, and historical connections to the land. In recent years, there has been a revitalization of Indigenous language and cultural practices, strengthening community identity and relationships with the land. The coexistence of Indigenous and settler histories shapes Temagami’s unique character and continues to influence local planning and development efforts.
