Temagami, located in northeastern Ontario, has a long and storied history rooted in both Indigenous culture and settler development. The region has been home to the Teme-Augama Anishnabai for thousands of years, with deep cultural and spiritual ties to the land. European settlers arrived in the 19th century, drawn by the area’s natural resources and scenic beauty. By the early 1900s, Temagami began to emerge as a popular destination for outdoor recreation, especially canoeing and fishing, thanks to increased access provided by railroads and early tourism entrepreneurs.

The community’s path to formal governance began in 1968 when it was incorporated as an Improvement District. Over the next decade, it evolved into a Township, with expanded boundaries that included surrounding areas. In 1998, Temagami underwent a significant amalgamation, combining with 17 unincorporated townships to form the Municipality of Temagami. This change allowed for more coordinated planning and service delivery across a larger and more diverse area, better reflecting the needs of both the permanent and seasonal populations.

Today, Temagami operates as a single-tier municipal government, providing services such as infrastructure maintenance, emergency services, land use planning, and tourism support. Led by a mayor and council, the municipal government works closely with residents, businesses, and Indigenous partners to support sustainable development and community well-being. With its rich natural environment and strong sense of local identity, Temagami remains a unique and vibrant municipality in northern Ontario.
