The Municipality of Temagami stands with communities across Canada in recognizing Emergency Preparedness Week.
This national awareness campaign highlights the importance of planning ahead for unexpected emergencies—whether natural, technological, or human-made.
By taking a few proactive steps, every household can strengthen its ability to withstand events such as severe storms, flooding, cyber threats, or hazardous material incidents. Here’s how to get started:
Make a Plan: Know how you and your family will respond to different emergencies. A clear plan ensures everyone understands their role when time matters most.
Assemble an Emergency Kit: Stock essential supplies to sustain your household for at least 72 hours without outside assistance. This includes food, water, medications, lighting, and communication tools.
Stay Informed: Subscribe to services like CODE RED for emergency alerts, monitor local conservation authority updates, and use weather alert apps to stay ahead of potential risks.
Build Community Resilience: Connect with neighbours to establish a local support network—preparedness is stronger when shared.
Protect Your Home: Regular maintenance and upgrades such as pruning overgrown trees, sealing drafts, adding surge protection, and installing backwater valves can reduce risk and damage from environmental hazards.
Personal preparedness plays a critical role in how individuals and communities respond to and recover from crises. Don’t wait—start today. A well-stocked emergency kit and a solid plan can make all the difference.
Make an emergency plan
It will take you about 20 minutes to make a family emergency plan online. You can then print it out. Before starting, you will need to think about:
Safe exits from home and neighbourhood
Meeting places to reunite with family or roommates
Designated person to pick up children should you be unavailable
Contact persons close-by and out-of-town
Health and insurance information
Places for your pet to stay
Risks in your region
Location of your fire extinguisher, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain
Create Your Plan
This form will help you create your home emergency plan. It should only take about 20 minutes to complete. There are eight easy steps. Even if you are uncertain about how to answer some of the sections, skip to the next section. Once finished, you will have a document that you can download to your computer to be saved, printed or updated. You can always add more information later to any sections you may have skipped. You may also check with your local government authorities for existing plans to use as a reference.
