Municipality of Temagami Homeowners to Receive Information again about Optional Service Line Repair Plans

Mailing is part of program originally launched in 2016

Temagami, ONOctober 18, 2021 – In 2016, the Municipality of Temagami and Service Line Warranties of Canada (SLWC) launched a partnership that gives Temagami homeowners access to affordable service repair plans that cover needed repairs to the exterior water and sewer service lines connecting their homes to the municipal systems.

A recent SLWC “State of the Canadian Home” survey found that 65% of Canadian homeowners are unaware that they are financially responsible for any needed repairs or replacement to the water and sewer lines on their property. When a water or sewer line breaks, they are frustrated to find out that the repair is not covered under typical homeowner’s insurance or by the Municipality of Temagami and many homeowners are financially unprepared to pay for a home emergency out-of-pocket. The same survey found that almost one-third (31%) of Canadian homeowners have $500 or less set aside for an emergency home repair.

The no-deductible, low-cost service plans, available through SLWC, ensure homeowners do not have to pay hundreds or even thousands out-of-pocket for a repair. The plans give Temagami homeowners reliable access to local, licensed, and vetted contractors who can quickly and professionally complete needed repairs on service lines. Repair plans start at just $5.75 a month.

“We found many residents were unaware of their responsibility for fixing problems with the water and sewer lines on their private property. When something went wrong, they would contact the municipality looking for help, only to learn the repair and associated costs were their responsibility,” said Craig Davidson, Temagami Treasurer-Administrator. “We partnered with SLWC to help educate homeowners about their responsibility and offer them an affordable option to protect themselves in the event of an emergency. SLWC has always been easy to work with, responsive and overall, a benefit to the homeowners of Temagami.”

While it has been some time since Temagami homeowners have received information about the program, homeowners will soon receive updated information in the mail about the available optional plans; there is no obligation to sign up for a plan – participation in the program is voluntary. The mailings will include the logo of the Municipality of Temagami to indicate that the mailing is legitimate and that there is a partnership in place between Temagami and SLWC. The program is provided at no cost to Temagami and no public funds are used to promote or administer it.

“A SLWC service plan is a smart way for homeowners to prepare for inevitable home emergencies. These plan takes the worry, inconvenience, and financial burden out of a home emergency,” said Mike Van Horne, General Manager, Service Line Warranties of Canada, a HomeServe Company. “Temagami homeowners with a plan have easy access to a network of excellent, local contractors, and they get peace of mind that they won’t be financially responsible for a covered home emergency.”

Homeowners in 65 Ontario municipalities now have access to SLWC service repair plans. Since the SLWC program began in 2014, homeowners have saved more than $6 million in repair expenses.
