If you are interested in joining, we have a small interview process you must go through. The main purpose of the hiring process is to make sure that we have people who are going to take being a member of the department seriously.

If you are interested in joining the emergency response division, you will also need to provide a doctor’s note that says you are physically capable of doing the work of a fire fighter.

Emergency Response Division

The Municipality of Temagami uses the 9-1-1 emergency call system. Fire calls are received and then dispatched through our paging system. All firefighters carry a pager that will give out a unique tone, and then give details of the emergency across their pager from Northern dispatch. Once paged out, the firefighters make their way to the fire hall, where they drive one of the fire apparatus to the scene of the incident.

Meetings are held during the evening, starting at 1900 hrs. We train twice monthly to make sure we are well trained, and prepared to deal with any and all situations. Once a month, we go over our equipment to make sure that everything is in good working order, and that everything is where it should be.

All of our new recruits are also put through a basic 16 hour training course. At the end of the course, recruits have a good understanding of fire, and how to fight it. Once the course is done, students will continue to learn and upgrade their skills through training done at the fire hall.

Fire Prevention & Public Education Division

The goal of fire prevention and public education is to prevent fires from starting through public education & code enforcement. As a member of the fire prevention division you may be involved in a range of prevention programs; from presentations to students and community groups; developing fire prevention displays, or assisting with smoke alarm surveys and fire code inspections.

While emergency response personnel are expected to be available any time, members of the prevention division hours are during the day, and could involve a combination of week days as well as on the occasional weekend.

We meet on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 19:00 hours; meetings are a combination of training and fire prevention business.

If you think you can donate some of your time, and energy, give us a shout. We will give you all the training you need to make sure you know what you are doing, and to keep you safe.
